BoG governor to retire March-ending

Henry Kofi WampahBank of Ghana Governor, Henry Kofi Wampah, will retire this week, he said on Tuesday, cutting short a four-year term during which he has struggled to curb inflation and stem the decline of the national currency.

Wampah, whose term officially ends on Aug. 5, told Reuters he had informed President John Mahama of his intention to leave by the end of this month, adding the decision was partly linked to presidential and parliamentary elections planned for November.

"I told him I wanted to leave office early and we have agreed that I will exit at the end of March," Wampah said. "It is just fair to leave early in order to give enough room for my successor, whoever it might be, to settle down before we get to the elections."

He said one of his two deputies, either Millison Narh or Abdul Nashiru Issahaku, was expected to serve as interim central bank governor until Mahama chooses a permanent successor.

Once considered a rising star in Africa, Ghana, which exports cocoa, gold and oil, has been dogged by large budget deficits, ballooning public debt and inflation that consistently tops government targets.

Mahama appointed Wampah amid serious fiscal imbalances caused mainly by election spending in 2012 and a burdensome public sector wage bill that complicated the bank's task of managing the money supply.

Wampah responded with a string of monetary policy reforms, including tighter foreign exchange liquidity management to slow inflation.

The bank held its benchmark interest rate at 26 percent in its latest rate decision last week.

As a member of the economic management team, he also helped negotiate a $918 million programme with the International Monetary Fund last year aimed at re-establishing macro-economic stability.

"Its unfortunate that Wampah is not going to be there to complete the IMF program through the election period," said Joe Abbey, director of the Accra-based Centre for Policy Analysis.

Bishop Obinim Movie The movie poster
Controversial actor cum director Samuel Ofori who is better known in the film industry of using topical issues as title of his movies has done it again and this time with Bishop Daniel Kwadwo Obinim.

Information reaching seancitygh.com indicates that a leaked poster of the movie has generated a lot of heat in the camp of bishop Obinim.

According to seancitygh.com furious Bishop Obinim has threatened to deal ruthlessly with the movie producer in his own way.

“If he wants to subject my hard earned reputation into public scrutiny then I will also make sure he goes bankrupt", he stressed.

"He will auction majority of his properties, he will beg to eat", he said. But few people who have had a glance of the movie say the movie is a full biography of the bishop, where he comes from and how he started his ministry.

The movie also questions the credibility of Bishop Daniel Obinim. Several attempts to get the producer to react to this issue has proved futile.

NPP not happy about continuous holding of 3 SA police officers

The opposition New Patriotic Party has criticized the continuous holding of three ex-South African police officers by the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) despite bail granted by the court.
The three were in the country to train some members of the NPP flagbearer’s security detail.
Last Thursday a Circuit Court in Accra granted bail in the sum of ¢20,000 each with one surety.
They are charged with conspiracy to commit crime, unlawful training and making false declaration.
Their lawyers protested a decision by the BNI to return the 3 South Africans to custody though the magistrate had ordered they be held at the registry until bail proceedings were completed
But at the NPP headquarters Monday morning, the angry party members demanded their immediate release.
The NPP is also worried about the arrest and detention of Captain Koda, head of security for the party's flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo.
The party is in no mood to accept what it believes is the flagrant violation of the fundamental human rights of its security capo as well as the South Africans who it invited.
