Kumasi: Fire renders over 200 Kayayei homeless

A raging fire at Afful Nkwanta in Kumasi in the Ashanti region has rendered over 200 Kayayei (porters) homeless.

The fire started Saturday evening around 7pm and fire tenders had it tough gaining access to the shanty town primarily occupied by the Kayayei, who have settled in the area for decades now.

According to eyewitness electrical gadgets including TV sets, DVD players as well as cash, clothes and some head pans being used by the porters in their trade got destroyed in the blaze.

Although the fire fighters had a torrid time accessing the Slum, they eventually managed to douse the blaze.

The potters woke up Sunday morning assessing the extent of damages. The cause of the fire is immediately not known, but it is coming on the heels of a ravaging one which destroyed the Kumasi Central Market a few days ago.
