Return ex-GITMO detainees – Nana Addo

According to Mustapha Hamid, the former Foreign Affairs Minister finds the entire process used by the Mahama-led administration to accept the suspected terrorists flawed.
“Nana Addo thinks the process is flawed...and was wrong for government to accept them,” Hamid said on Citi FM’s Big Issue Saturday.
The two ex-detainees who were held at Guantanamo Bay for over 14 years were transferred to Ghana as part of measures by the US government to close down that hardcore prison.
Majority of Ghanaians have slammed government’s decision to accept the ex-detainees without proper consultations.
The NPP has in a statement condemned the decision and has called on government to return the two Yemenis. But Criticisms were rife that the failure of Nana Addo to independently speak on the raging issue meant he quietly accepted government’s position.
But Hamid explained that Nana Addo’s position is not different from the party he leads. According to him, Nana Addo is seeking the mandate of Ghanaians and would not kowtow to the whims of US if he was president.
He added that Nana Addo completely rejects the decision and thinks the NDC government has failed the people of Ghana by accepting the terrorist suspects.

Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, says the
party’s flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, would have turned down a request by
the United States government for Ghana to host two former detainees of
Guantanamo Bay in the country if he were in power.
According to Akomea, former president Kufuor would also have done same in the same position.
“The
government of Kufuor wouldn’t have taken these people in at all in the
first place. Government of Nana Akufo-Addo would not have taken them in.
His reason will be the same reason that Ghanaians have given. If
America won’t, why do we want to take the things America doesn’t want.
Are we a dumping ground?” he said on the Point Blank segment on Eyewitness News.
A decision by the Mahama-led government
to host two supposed terrorists from America, has been widely criticized
despite assurances by the US government that the two pose no risk to
Ghana.
The NPP subsequently issued a statement to condemn the decision.
When the sit-in host of Eyewitness News,
Umaru Sanda, probed further and questioned why Nana Addo has been
silent on the matter, Nana Akomea  said the flagbearer is solidly behind
the statement issued by the party.
He insisted that “do you think the NPP
would issue a statement if the flagbearer disagrees with it? It’s not
going to happen. How can the party issue a statement that he doesn’t
agree with.? We will not issue a statement that he is against it. He may
still speak but essentially what the party has said is what he stands
by. The party has spoken,” he added.
